Oil, gold leaf on wood panel
11 7/8 X 4 5/8 in.
This painting uses the repertoire of medieval and renaissance panel painting to address issues associated with contemporary mass tourism. The anonymous figure refers to not only the ubiquitous presence of tourists in Italy, but the tenuous co-existence between visitors and the art treasures of so many Italian cities. The panel pays tribute to the intrepid spirit of travelers and study abroad students, but also comments on the prevalence of social media and digital culture as a means of interfacing with, processing, and disseminating the material culture of Italy's past.
