Working at La Scuola Arte del Mosaico di Ravenna
2007

In order to more fully understand and appreciate the design, creation, and purpose of mosaics, in 2007 I took an introductory course in traditional Byzantine mosaic production at La Scuola Arte del Mosaico, run by master mosaicist Luciana Notturni. The course was brief but comprehensive and covered the cutting of marble and vitreous glass (smalti) tesserae, the design and techniques for assembly, and the use of adhesives and grouts for securing and sealing mosaics. Eye-opening in its own right, I hoped to take away ideas on how one could find/create parallel approaches to flat image production in the medium of paint.
