The House of the Stone Carpets, Ravenna
The House of the Stone Carpets, Ravenna
2007

The Domus di Tapetti di Pietre (House of the Stone Carpets) in Ravenna was a recently opened archaeological site that displays multiple layers of floor mosaics dating the late Roman, Byzantine, and early Christian periods. Many of these mosaics were presented in situ so visitors can appreciate the expanse of the floor mosaics and the interrelationship of designs in adjoining rooms. As the various periods could obviously not be presented simultaneously as horizontal floors, some were mounted vertically on walls.
