    Best of Show Awarded at LCC May Show
    The painting "Torcello Plates" was recently awarded the Best of Show prize at the 2014 May Show at Lakeland Community College in Kirtland, Ohio. The jurors, artist George Kozmon, and Maggie Guthrie, Gallery Manager at Don Drumm Studios & Gallery, accepted 91 works of art out of 400 submissions for the show.

    Solo Exhibition at Hiram College
    Christopher Ryan will present a solo exhibiton at Hiram College titled Perspectives on Pilgrimage: paintings from recent travels in Italy. The show will consist of three series of paintings, each of which addresses the theme of pilgrimage and tourism in Italy. The show will open with a public reception on Friday, Sept. 6 from 5:00 - 7:00 PM, and will run until October 10, 2013.

  • January-February 2013

    Solo Exhibition at Mount Union University
    Christopher Ryan will present a solo exhibition of paintings at Mount Union University in Alliance, Ohio titled "Surfaces and Spaces." The exhibition will run from February 6 to March 6, 2013, and will consist of paintings from the Pavimenti and landscape series. A reception and artist talk will take place on Friday, February 15 from 4-6 PM.

  • Summer 2012

    NEH Summer Institute studying ancient Etruscans in Italy
    Christopher Ryan participated in a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute titled "Legacy of Ancient Italy: Etruscan and Early Roman Cities.” The institute focused on how material culture from the 8th - 1st century BCE reveals the vibrant culture of the Etruscans, as well as recent discoveries pertaining to Etruscan urban development. Based in Orvieto, Florence, and Rome, the program explored archaeological sites and museums in renowned Etruscan centers such as Tarqinia, Chiusi, Bologna, Volterra, and Fiesole.
    Ryan spent this time researching the use of religious ritual in the formation of cities, and will use this material in teaching applications as well as his own art-making activities.

    Solo Exhibition of Paintings at Wilmington College

  • Fall 2011
    Christopher Ryan Teaches Painting in Cortona, Italy

    Christopher Ryan was invited to spend the fall semester in Cortona, Italy teaching painting for the University of Georgia's Study Abroad program in Cortona. Ryan taught Introductory and Intermediate Painting to undergradautes, and worked on his own artwork as well. Ryan completed a number of plein air paintings of sites in and around Cortona, and began developing a new series addressing the complex issues surrounding mass tourism in Italy.

    Point of Departure: Five Contemporary Realists
    June 6 - July 30, 2010
    Schedel Gardens, Elmore, Ohio

    This show will include eight of my paintings, along with works by Philip Jackson, Paul LaJeunesse, Jason Lewis, and Dennis Wojtkiewicz, who also curated the show. An accompanying catalog will be available with images and bios on the artists, including an introduction by art historian Dr. Allie Terry-Fritsch of Bowling Green State University. An opening reception will take place on Sunday, June 6 from 2:00-5:00 PM at the Brown Welcome Center of the Schedel Gardens.

    Summer Research in Rome, Italy
    Thanks to a grant from Hiram College, I was able to spend several weeks in Rome, Italy this past Spring. The goal was to familiarize myself with the geography, sites, and monuments of Rome in anticipation of a possible Study Abroad trip to Rome. I also collected materials and images for the future creation of an Artist Book.
